| 1. While not every 17 year old is going to go out and wrap their 300+ hp car around a telephone pole while racing a riced-out honda, the chances of it happening to a 17 year old versus an older person are much much greater. That part is about judgment skills that come from life experience and dealing with the concequences that come from screwing up in life. 2. Another aspect that hasn't been touched on is the simple fact that a 17 year old will not have very much time behind the wheel. I don't care if you start at 15 or 50, it takes time and experience to attain the skill necessary to properly control a high powered sports car in a relatively safe manner. Spending a good deal of time behind the wheel of a lower powered car makes for a great learning experience, allowing the driver to make mistakes with the chance much much lower concequences. That being said, Are older drivers necessarily better drivers? Hell no. Your average A to B driver who is 50 years old wouldn't know how to handle a sports carany better than a 17 year old, but they would have the judgement to know their limitations (which makes them safer). However ... enthusiast drivers get better with the amount of time spent behind the wheel, learning new things with every mile spent driving. Bottom line:The average 17 year old driver does not have the skill set necessary to safely handle a high-horsepower car in a safe manner, whether it is driving skill, experience, or judgement.
